Frank Darmofalski W1FD - SK

MARC mourns the passing of one of its founding charter members and first president. Frank Darmofalski W1FD became a silent key on Sunday, November 2, 2008 at the age of 92 years.

Frank held an amateur license and was active on-the-air for more than 75 years – preceding the formation of the FCC by several years. He held the calls W1FYG (now held by his grandson), W1YY, and W1FD. Frank could be found on the air several times a week contacting new and old friends around the US and the world almost anywhere in the HF spectrum throughout his amateur radio tenure.

Starting off using normal power level operations, he quickly became an advocate of QRP operations. Frank was also an advocate of non-commercial power, emergency preparedness, and above all, proper operating techniques. He was active in ARES, Meriden Emergency Communications and all aspects of the Meriden Amateur Radio Club. Frank could always be found helping at Field Day, Walk-A-Thons, Special Events, and club active contests. But most remember Frank for his encouraging words, helpful hints, and optimistic “Elmering” of new hams or experienced OMs.

Following a mandatory curtailment of amateur radio during World War II, Frank and some returning veterans started a local radio club – the Meriden Amateur Radio Club – that continues today.  Enthusiastic about young hams and potential engineering candidates, Frank started a scholarship fund aimed at encouraging high school graduates entering engineering and communications. These legacies will continue long after Frank’s key is silent.

The Meriden Amateur Radio Club and the Amateur Radio community extend their deepest sympathies to his family.
